Malaysian Foodie – In celebration of Chinese New Year, EQ is presenting their Gifts of Prosperity, a selection of from delectable yee sang, the signature fortune pen cai, decadent dining sets, à la carte items, luxurious hampers and customisable gifts. Anticipating reunion dinners, EQ created their first ever pen cai as a way to have each individual family member’s favourite foods served together at once with mouth-watering homemade sauces. “An authentic pen cai should be able to elevate the flavours of the simple ingredients,” tells Chef Tan. “It should also be layered properly with drier ingredients on the top and other ingredients that are better at absorbing flavours at the bottom.” The signature fortune pen cai priced at RM888 is prepared with luxurious ingredients such as 10-head abalone, free range chicken, fish maw, roasted duck, dried oysters, fresh prawns and grouper fillet with complimentary supreme dried scallop XO sauce that is made in-house.

I was sad to read the recent news of the closure of Hotel Equatorial Penang. A friend had forwarded me a message containing a letter sent to the hotel staff. It mentioned: “… the adverse business conditions caused by Covid-19” as the reason for the closure.
The hotel is one of the iconic landmarks in Penang, built in the late 1980s on a hillock in Bukit Jambul, Bayan Lepas. I always stayed at the hotel during my working days as I liked its immense swimming pool and the surrounding lush landscape.

The 37-year-old Penangite claimed the honour after obtaining the most number of votes in the final round of 10 athletes after the world-wide poll closed at 9pm Malaysian time.
Nicol, the only Asian athlete shortlisted for the award, picked up a massive 318,945 votes.

We might not be able to head out to our favourite dining rooms due to the ongoing MCO, but we can certainly make our at-home-dining experience a five-star affair. Make it like ordering room service, but without the stuffiness of a hotel room.

Circumstances have made the decision to close our Hotel a very painful one. We are particularly appreciative of all our employees past and present, who have helped create this hotel into a cornerstone of Penang Island hospitality. Together with our associates, we thank you for your terrific support.
