You’ve probably heard of EQ Kuala Lumpur, but perhaps not the same that you know of. Before it became the five-star hotel it is today, it was known as Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur. Built in 1973, the hotel was a focal point for many locals and gained its reputation as a five-star hotel destination around town. In 2012, it closed its doors for a full redevelopment and lay in waiting for seven years before making its grand return to the Golden Triangle.

Yesterday, EQ announced the newest feather in its cap, a significant accolade to add on to an extensive collection. The hotel has been recognised as a 2020 Travellers’ Choice winner on Tripadvisor, with over 215 reviews earned since its opening last year.
Tatler Malaysia – “I wanted to create flavours that are inviting, delicious and healthy to cater to both young and older,” explained executive sous chef Tan Tzaan Ling with regards to EQ’s mooncakes in 2020. “We’ve experimented with textures and tastes of individual ingredients, combining the best of sweet and savoury as well as soft and chewy.”
Buro 24/7 – When I was younger, I remember my parents mentioning Hotel Equatorial pretty often but I never understood why. It’s one of those entities I knew about as a child but never really got to know. For many Malaysians, Hotel Equatorial, which first opened in 1973, was a place filled with nostalgic memories.
Although I won’t be having the same experiences, I’m grateful to be able to carve my own at EQ Kuala Lumpur—the rebranded version of Hotel Equatorial KL. The rebranding of the hotel brand means that the legacy of one of the major landmarks in the city lives on; for some to renew their memories and for others to indulge for the first time.
Recently, I had the opportunity to do a weekend staycation at the five-star hotel.
Buro 24/7 – Pair impressive panoramic city views with a location in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s famed Golden Triangle and you’ll get the perfect staycation combo. Since reopening in March 2019 as EQ Kuala Lumpur after Hotel Equatorial closed its doors in 2012 for redevelopment, EQ—with 440 guest rooms and suites—has continued to cement a reputation as a hotel to visit in KL. Now, an entire floor is dedicated to fitness and wellness including the Sanctum gym and spa, the 25-metre infinity pool, a large vitality pool, and the Himalayan salt sauna. On the 51st floor, there’s Sabayon, a restaurant offering contemporary European cuisine, and Blue, an open-air rooftop bar and lounge.
Robb Report Malaysia – EQ has three staycation packages available from now until 29 December 2020 targeted at couples, families and luxury seekers. The first is The Urban Getaway package (RM788 per night) catered for couples, with a stay in a deluxe king room and complimentary breakfast at Nipah or room service, with an additional RM150 daily dining credit. Next is the Family Staycation deal (RM688 per night) with a stay at the deluxe queen double room, breakfast and set lunch for two adults and two children aged 12 years old and under at Nipah or room service. Lastly, The Suite Life promo (RM1088 per night) is available, featuring a stay at a studio suite, breakfast for two at Nipah or in-room, and a set lunch for two at French restaurant Sabayon.
Gaya Travel Magazine – EQ has announced three new staycation promotions available for booking and staying from now until 29 December 2020. Ranging from RM788 to RM1,088, guests will enjoy free cancellation up to 12PM one day before arrival and flexible check-in and check-out. The staycations are all half board promotions inclusive of breakfast and lunch or dining credit.
The Star – The hotel is offering indulgent savoury and sweet selections from Nipah with the Fathers Day special menu. Patrons get to enjoy a sumptuous barbecue brunch that includes classic starters, Asian and Western platters, mains and desserts.
Robb Report Malaysia – Situated on the two highest floors of EQ is the 235-square-metre Presidential Suite (RM28,000 per night), boasting a dedicated private lift, an open floor concept with floor to ceiling windows, and a team of butlers at your disposal. Across this opulent space are optional four adjoining bedrooms, with the option to convert either to a private spa suite or office, a spacious living area, an upper balcony library, and a black marble-tiled bathroom equipped with an oversized bathtub mounted next to a window with a full view of the iconic KL Tower.
